Club Events and Socialising

A varied programme of events, often suggested by members, is organised by the club’s Social Secretary throughout the year. In the past we have enjoyed BBQ, fish and chip supper, quiz nights, skittles and High tea as well as the annual Xmas lunches. Sunday 20th April,2025,was our Opening Drive. It was great to see so many of our members coming out of hibernation to play outdoors again. It was a fun afternoon enjoyed by all who attended. Thanks go to Roland who 'hosted' his first event. On Saturday 26th April, after a match was cancelled by our opponents, our new Vice Captain, Chris, broke his duck and lead us in a roll up game, which saw some of us using muscles we had forgotten we had. A good start to what we hope will be successful and happy season for all our members. 2026 season kicks off at 2.00pm Sunday 26th April with the Opening Drive. Away from bowls we meet other Lewesians at the annual Skittles Competition.
Our members took part in the 2024 Lewes Skittles competition. Our bowls skills, whilst showing great style, didn't win us a prize. Looking forward to 2025 when our experience may help us improve. Gained us some admirers and a couple of new sponsors! We'll be back again in 2026 with, we hope, three teams!!
Sunday 6th July 2025 was our Captain's Charity Day, this year's charity being St Peter and St James Hospice. There was a good turn out from the members and guests. We started with a 'spider' and then some less than serious bowling, including target bowls. We need to improve here as only one member stopped their bowl on top of the target! A single end competition was popular and saw new bowler Brian win with the last bowl of the Final. A bottle of wine was presented. (The smallest bottle we could find as it was Charity Day.) Jill was a worthy runner up.
The raffle, tombola, cake stall and crochet table all made a profit and helped empty members' pocket. Finally all enjoyed an excellent B.B.Q. of sausages, burgers and salad.
Just under £400 was raised on the day and we hope to reach the £400 on our Aussie Pairs Day when a further raffle will be held. Our thanks go to all who helped, too many to name, and enabled us to raise much needed money for this worthy cause.

Visitors and members excitedly waiting their turn for the target bowls. Over twenty people bowled two bowls each at three targets and just one came to rest on the target area. Just as well no one was taking it too seriously. Plenty of laughs, all in good part.

Social and Short Mat events winter 2025/26
We enjoyed a large number of short mat matches against various local sides throughout the winter, both home and away.
Results were mixed, but there was never a shortage of members wanting to play and enjoy the friendly competition. No leagues or knockout matches, just enjoyment of the company and some gentle exercise. We also tried 'awkward bowls' where you use both hands, stand side on and finally bowl whilst holding a balloon between your knees!
General social activities took place, the highlight being the Christmas lunch which over 30 members attended. Below are a selection of photos of these events.

Christmas short mat bowls and social 2025

,A goodly number of members came to the clubhouse for an afternoon of festive short mat bowls, Santa hats compulsory or lose a point. A round robin match saw the winners receive a chocolate lolly pop as a prize. (We don't throw our cash around!!) This was followed by home made sausage rolls and mince pies supplied by our own Master Chef, Roland assisted and supervised by Diane. (They generously donated the food.) The clubhouse was suitable decorated and helped to ensure that everyone enjoyed themself.
